This production is adapted from Call to Arms (Nahan), a short story collection by Lu Xun, and reinterprets his work in a contemporary theatrical context through the form of “super poor and totally mobile theater.” The piece explores the loneliness of marginalized individuals and their cry for expression. It brings together texts including Diary of a Madman, Kong Yiji, Medicine, The New Year’s Sacrifice, and the preface to Call to Arms, while extending its scope to Diary of a Madman by Nikolai Gogol. The performance begins with an empty stage, from which all theatrical elements are generated by the performers. As a Sino-German cultural collaboration, the artists draw on a specific avant-garde tradition, united within an expressionist aesthetic.
