Written by Howard Barker, the famous English playwright, poet, and painter, in 1984. The original title was "Scenes from an Execution". The play depicts a Venetian painter commissioned by the Venetian powers that be to paint a huge painting in praise of the victory of the Battle of Lepanto (1571), but the artist, who lives a life of debauchery and independence, decides to use the opportunity to paint a work that better expresses the true brutality of war.
